About Ponce Inlet

Ponce Inlet sits at the very end of the barrier island, where the Halifax River meets the Atlantic at Ponce de Leon Inlet. Water surrounds the town on three sides: the ocean to the east, the inlet to the south and the river to the west. It feels more like a small town than Daytona Beach, with no busy commercial strip. Condo buildings line the ocean side of Atlantic Avenue, and streets of single-family homes fill the middle of the peninsula and the river shore.

The town is known for its working waterfront. Charter fishing boats, marinas and casual seafood restaurants sit along the river near the inlet.

Things to do

The historic Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse is the town's landmark, and you can climb it and tour the museum on the grounds. Lighthouse Point Park, at the tip of the island, has the jetty, beach, fishing and walking paths. The Marine Science Center cares for sea turtles and shore birds and has exhibits and boardwalk trails.

Boating and fishing are the big draws, with marinas, boat ramps and charter boats near the inlet. The town also has nature trails through coastal hammock, tennis and pickleball courts, and waterfront restaurants on the river.

Getting around

Atlantic Avenue (A1A) is the main road in and out, running north through Wilbur-by-the-Sea and Daytona Beach Shores. The nearest mainland bridge is the Dunlawton Avenue bridge to Port Orange, a few miles north, which leads to I-95. Daytona Beach International Airport is about 20 to 30 minutes away, and Orlando is a little over an hour by car.

Homes in Ponce Inlet

Ponce Inlet has a small housing market, so not much is for sale at any one time. A bit more than half of the homes for sale are condos, most of them in oceanfront buildings or complexes near the inlet and river. The rest are mostly single-family homes, with a few townhouses. Many houses have private pools, and riverfront homes often come with docks and boat lifts.

Most homes and buildings date from the 1970s through the 2000s. Condo buyers should note that Florida's condo safety law applies to buildings three stories and up: ask for the latest milestone inspection, the structural integrity reserve study and any planned special assessments. Right now 68 homes are for sale in Ponce Inlet, asking from $150,000 to $5.2 million, with a median of $699,000.
